Useful Products
Below are some specific product recommendations, to augment the online retailer list. I have no financial stake in any of these.
Dolomite Soprano Rollator (multiple sites; price-shop)
Rollator priorities are cable-less (less chance of tripping), big wheels, handle height adjustment range that matches height, seat height that matches height. There are other options if the heights aren’t right on this one.
If its only use is indoors, you can get away with smaller wheels, of course.
I see many people using rollators whose handle height is set too low. That leads to premature neck/spine curvature and the inability to see what's in front can lead to falls. Always ask others if your spine is relatively straight and your eyes "on the road."
Straws (stainless steel) or these straws (plastic)
Light, easy to grasp coffee mug
Easy-grip juice glass that is also light
Light switch handle when it's hard to reach up
Bath step to make getting over a threshold easier
Car handle to help PALS get out of the car
Lift chair [multiple sizes; be sure to pick the right one! Also choose fabric, not fake leather). These should be "zero gravity" (meaning the back goes down as far as you need it to) and "infinite positions," not the type where you only have so many slots to click into. You can opt for massage and/or heat, but most PALS don't find those useful.
Note — at some point, PALS won't be able to use a lift chair, most likely, even using a floor lift to transfer in and out; it won't have enough structure to stay upright, and/or pressure relief to avoid pain, which a wheelchair seat and back cushion do.
Sofa/lift chair table
Pillow for side sleeping (so long as everything feels OK shoulderwise)
Voice-activated TV remote options depend on the TV model. Smart TVs and streaming boxes may be controlled with Alexa, Siri, etc. There are also options for older TVs.
If voice control is tiring, you can start with a phone as a remote, since no force is involved, again possible for most TVs.
Or, another possibility to have to see/push fewer buttons (especially if someone has low vision) is a low-tech remote with which favorite channels can be programmed and moved between with the arrow keys.
An oyster fork and cocktail spoon for eating
H table for bed or wheelchair eating, activities, available on Amazon; best to get a height-adjustable model
Travel pillows (regular fiber-filled kind but small) at BBN for joint support in bed, like elbows
DeRoyal foam belt for bed support — can wrap around boots/lower body
Foam blocks (we raided a foam store's dumpster) for protecting bony joints from pressure and thighs/feet from the wheelchair supports
GUM or other floss holders for teeth cleaning
Mini disposable toothbrushes if needed
Liquid vitamins and supplements available at health food stores, on and off line. Don't overdo these — everything you take takes precious energy to metabolize — energy that is in short supply in ALS.
